Celebrating St David’s Day 🌼

As St David’s Day arrives on 1st March, Wales comes alive with pride, colour, and tradition. It’s a time for daffodils, leeks, Welsh cakes, music, and stories – and a perfect moment to celebrate the man at the heart of it all: Saint David, the patron saint of Wales. See link below for 36 ways to celebrate this special day!

Who was St David?

Born in the 6th century, St David (Dewi Sant in Welsh) was a monk, teacher, and preacher who founded religious communities across Wales and beyond. Known for his humility, kindness, and simple way of life, he encouraged people to live modestly, work hard, and care for one another.

One of the most famous legends tells of him preaching to a large crowd when the ground beneath him rose up into a hill so everyone could see and hear him clearly – a miracle said to have confirmed his holiness.

His most famous words still resonate today:

“Gwnewch y pethau bychain” – “Do the little things.”

It’s a simple message, but one that beautifully reflects the Welsh spirit and way of life.

Why He matters to Wales

St David is more than a historical figure – he represents Welsh identity, faith, resilience, and community. His legacy is woven into the cultural fabric of Wales, and his day is celebrated across the nation with parades, school events, traditional dress, and local festivities.

From villages to cities, it’s a day when Wales proudly celebrates its language, heritage, and traditions – and warmly welcomes visitors to do the same.

St Davids Cathedral – in Britain’s Smallest City

At the heart of St David’s story lies the beautiful coastal city of St Davids, officially the smallest city in the UK but rich in history, charm, and natural beauty.

Here you’ll find the breathtaking St Davids Cathedral, built on the site where St David himself founded a monastery. Nestled in a sheltered valley, the cathedral is a place of peace, reflection, and wonder – impressive whether you’re spiritual or simply love historic architecture. The Normal Cathedral, begun more than 900 years ago, recognised the power and importance of St David to the Welsh people and housed what were believed to be his bones and those of other saints.

Through the following centuries people made special journeys here to pray, see healing, ask forgiveness or give thanks. That sense of connection to those whose faith was a beacon is just as important to many people today. In the Middle Ages, two pilgrimages to this cathedral were counted as equal to a pilgrimage to Rome!
